Here's the deal. Starting Thursday at Jewel, Honey Bunches of Oats and Fruity Pebbles are on sale for $1.59 each. When you buy 5, you get $4 back. If you've registered your card here, you'll get $2 back when you buy 2 (you can get only one per transaction). Combine this with coupons, and you have one awesome deal! But even if you don't have coupons that's only $2 for 5 boxes of cereal!

There are quite a few catalina deals going on at Jewel right now. This time around, I went through the coupons I had and focused on figuring out a few transactions on matching items that I know we'll use. FYI, these worked perfectly at the Romeoville Jewel. For the Suave to produce the $2 CAT, be sure to register your Jewel card here (it takes about 36 hours to activate). I used the Suave as a moneymaker to reduce the OOP (out-of-pocket) on the following transactions. Even if you don't have coupons, these are definitely stock-up prices!!

Sidetracked

Thank you, dear readers, for your patience as I've been a bit sidetracked the past couple weeks. Those of you who know me are aware that I have entrepreneurial tendencies in my genes. I started teaching piano lessons in eighth grade and had up to 45 students at one point after receiving my B.A. After high school, I faced serious health challenges that made me delve into lots of reading about natural remedies. Thankfully, a well-trusted doctor with an additional degree in biochemistry recommended me to Body Wise, and because of the tremendous results that ensued, I began a part-time business on my own. Now I'm at home with my children after teaching full-time for 8 years. Let me tell you, it's definitely rewarding, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

But in the last few weeks, my husband and I have been working like crazy to put him into business again. A few years ago, he was doing business as Dan's Tree Service, but for the last year and half, he's been working as an employee for the largest tree care company in the nation. He enjoyed his time with them and learned volumes, but he is now partnering with a friend, and they have started Arborworks, LLC, an environmental tree and grounds care company. Since Dan is an ISA Certified Arborist and ISA Certified Tree Climber Specialist, he will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the field. His customers have always given rave reviews about the quality of his work and expertise in the field.

As many of you know who have started a business, there's a ton of groundwork to lay and many hours of preparation to put in. That should explain where I've been the past few weeks. However, I can't wait to tell you about the new Jewel Catalina that will be starting Thursday! As soon as I lay my eyes on that ad, I will tell you what the best deals will be. * My personal experience with these: If you have a good technician, the refills turn out great! I decided to try these refills for a few reasons:

Cartridge refills are so expensive when you buy the name brand or even store brand
Because of all the coupon printing I do, I just want a way to print cheaply.
The cost of printers are very low when you consider that two cartridges are included (sometimes they are starter cartridges without the high print yield, but still a good deal). This point is important to me because if the refills would do any damage to my printer, it wouldn't cost me that much more to buy a new printer with cartridges included!
By the way, did you know that you can set your printer to default print in black & white? This should save you some color ink. (Go to control panel, printer setup to change the default settings.)
All in all, I'm pretty satisfied with Walgreens refills and think it's definitely worth it, especially when they have the deals like this week's or last week's or even B1G1 free!

Many have asked me, "How valuable is it for you to get the Sunday newspaper with the coupon inserts?" Well, I think the best way to answer is for you to look here, here, and here. Of course, we don't live off cereal. (In fact, sometimes I trade it for whole, unpasteurized, organic milk from my parents' farm.) But when I can find healthy cereal at a great price (like 6 boxes for $1.16), I stock pile as much as I know we'll use. However, I do believe in good nutrition. We eat fruits and vegetables every day. We drink organic milk. We try to eat a fresh green salad every day. I love making my own bread. Yes, we do eat desserts, although it's a rare occurrence for me to buy packaged desserts and cookies (but we do love good ice cream!). My point is: there's a balance. Scoop up those great deals, but don't forget to eat your green and orange veggies every day!

My favorite place to buy greens: Sam's Club. Pick up a 16 oz. box of Organic Spring Green Mix for around $3.99!!

Couponing Basics - Part 1

Here are a few steps to help you start saving BIG on your groceries, toiletries, and around-the-house expenses.

Buy the Sunday newspaper. Ironically enough, I'm telling you to buy to save. However, this step is worth it! Pull out those coupon inserts! Clip the coupons you know you'll use, and file the rest of the insert in a file folder labeled with the date the insert was issued. Choose the major newspaper for best value coupons (i.e. Pick the Chicago Tribune over the Chicago Sun-Times). The number of inserts varies from week to week, so don't worry if there's only one insert the first week you buy the paper. In addition, ask friends and family to give you their unused inserts.
Stock up when the prices are lowest. Pay attention to the "loss leaders" at the grocery stores. If you know prices, and the sale price is the lowest you've seen at a number of stores, then stock up. It's even better if you can match the sale with coupons!
Be willing to try different brands. When I started serious "couponing," I found myself trying lots of new brands. In fact, I started buying far fewer store brand and Aldi items because I could get name brand products cheaper when on sale and/or combined with a coupon. In some cases, you might not be able to budge on your favorite brand, but if you can, go ahead and give it a try!
Be an observant shopper! Be constantly on the lookout for clearance items and coupon dispensers throughout the store. When our Jewel marked down Domino Brown Sugar to $1/bag, I bought a few and used the coupons in my coupon holder to get some pretty cheap brown sugar! Make use of those coupon dispensers throughout the store (blinkies, they're called). If you'll use the item being advertised, pick up a coupon or two and file it in your coupon organizer. Very likely, that item will go on sale, and you'll be able to use the coupon when the price is right! When Kraft cheese was on sale recently, I was so thankful to have picked up coupons a few weeks earlier. This resulted in my getting FREE cheese.
Learn the coupon policies of the stores in your area. Store coupons (Target, Walgreens, and other stores issue these) can be stacked with manufacturer coupons. Also find out:
* Do any stores accept expired coupons? (Many Jewel and Dominick's do!)
* Do any stores in your area double coupons? (I have yet to find any Chicagoland stores that do this.)
* Do they Price Match? (Wal-Mart is famous for this one.)
* Do they accept competitor's coupons? (Jewel's policy has been to accept competitor's manufacturer coupons.)
Get ready to make a quick weekly stop at CVS and Walgreens. You'll be amazed at how cheap you can get some common household items including razors, toilet paper, shampoo, napkins, snacks, and more! In the days ahead, we'll talk about these two stores in detail.

Yummy Lasagna and Fresh Coleslaw

Making do with what you have in the house can be a fun challenge. Although we usually need to buy produce every week, sometimes we can come up with lots of great recipes from what we have in our pantries.

Believe it or not, I actually had all the ingredients on hand to make lasagna today! Thanks to the great deal on cheese at Jewel a couple weeks ago, the cottage cheese I was given, and the meaty spaghetti sauce I made & froze a few weeks ago, this lasagna didn't take too long to make!

In addition, I used the rest of the head of cabbage I bought last week (for St. Patrick's Day, of course!) to make a fresh batch of coleslaw. (You do know, cabbage is quite good for you, right?) For those of you who enjoy baking and working in the kitchen, I've included the recipes.

MOM'S FAMOUS LASAGNA
(Makes one 13x9 pan)

Sauce
Brown 1 lb. hamburger & drain
Add...

3 ½ cups crushed up tomatoes
2-3 cloves crushed garlic
3 tbsp. chopped parsley
2 tsp. salt
¼ (or less) tsp. pepper
2 tbsp. basil
2 cans tomato paste

Bring it to a boil, turn to low, and let it simmer ½ hour.

Cottage Cheese Mixture
Beat up 2 eggs with fork.
Add...

1 carton (16 oz.) cottage cheese
Salt and pepper
2 tbsp. fresh chopped parsley

Prepare your noodles as directed.

Cheese
Have 1-1.5 lbs. of shredded mozarella cheese

To assemble:

Make two layers of your ingredients as follows:
Noodles, Cottage cheese, Grated cheese, Meat sauce
For the top layer, use this order: cottage cheese, meat, mozzarella cheese on top

Bake uncovered at 350-375 for about 45 minutes.

COLESLAW

For 4 cups shredded cabbage...

Shake up this dressing:

1/3 cup white vinegar
3 Tbsp oil
1 tsp salt
1/8-1/4 tsp pepper
1 tsp minced onion
3 Tbsp sugar

Pour over cabbage and refrigerate for about an hour before serving.

This week, we'll be learning some of the basics of couponing. But here's your first assignment: pick up a Sunday paper and save the coupons. The Sunday newspaper is the most valuable source of coupons you will get. This is what I do:

Purchase multiple copies
Clip the ones I know I'll use
File the rest in a file folder labeled with the day's date

Most Dollar Stores carry the newspaper for $1, and around here, Menards sells it for $1 too. The larger metropolitan area newspapers (i.e. The Chicago Tribune or New York Times) usually carry the higher value coupons, so opt for one of these if you can.
