Dominick's/Safeway Deal on Bertolli's through 3/31

Have you ever tried Bertolli's premium pasta sauce in those snazzy looking pouches? Even though I usually make my own pasta sauce, I had a few high value coupons a while back and thought I'd give them a try. Here's your opportunity to do the same.

Dominick's has a promotion that goes like this: Buy 10 of a certain group of items at $2 each, and you will save $5 instantly (so 10 items for $15, or $1.50 each). Bertolli's pouch sauces are included, and many have reported finding $1 off coupons in a blinkie machine in front of the pouches. To make this even better, for every two pouches you buy, Catalinas are printing for $2 off your next order! Here's a great scenario:

Buy 10 pouches = $20
Instant $5 Savings = $15
Use 10 $1 coupons = $5 out of pocket
Receive $10 in Catalinas
= Free + overage of $5 after instant savings, coupons, and Catalinas

(If your store doesn't have the blinkies, the pouches will end up being $0.50.

Free Download from Sacred Audio

Go here to get your free download of "I Sing the Mighty Power of God" from the "God of Mercy" album by the BJU Singers and Orchestra. If you already have an account, just click the download button next to the "FREE" song and proceed. You do not have to buy the entire album in order to get the free download.  If you don't have an account, then sign up for one for free. It enables you to purchase songs or complete albums and download them immediately to your computer! (You can also listen to portions of each track before downloading.) Every so often, they highlight a new CD and offer a free download. In addition to getting my free songs, I've also used this service to download single songs and print music! They have a great number of selections and even offer gift certificates for that hard-to-buy-for person.

Yummy Lasagna and Fresh Coleslaw

Making do with what you have in the house can be a fun challenge. Although we usually need to buy produce every week, sometimes we can come up with lots of great recipes from what we have in our pantries.

Believe it or not, I actually had all the ingredients on hand to make lasagna today! Thanks to the great deal on cheese at Jewel a couple weeks ago, the cottage cheese I was given, and the meaty spaghetti sauce I made & froze a few weeks ago, this lasagna didn't take too long to make!

In addition, I used the rest of the head of cabbage I bought last week (for St. Patrick's Day, of course!) to make a fresh batch of coleslaw. (You do know, cabbage is quite good for you, right?) For those of you who enjoy baking and working in the kitchen, I've included the recipes.

MOM'S FAMOUS LASAGNA
(Makes one 13x9 pan)

Sauce
Brown 1 lb. hamburger & drain
Add...
  • 3 ½ cups crushed up tomatoes
  • 2-3 cloves crushed garlic
  • 3 tbsp. chopped parsley
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • ¼ (or less) tsp. pepper
  • 2 tbsp. basil
  • 2 cans tomato paste
Bring it to a boil, turn to low, and let it simmer ½ hour.

Cottage Cheese Mixture
Beat up 2 eggs with fork.
Add...
  • 1 carton (16 oz.) cottage cheese
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tbsp. fresh chopped parsley
Prepare your noodles as directed.

Cheese
Have 1-1.5 lbs. of shredded mozarella cheese

To assemble:
  • Make two layers of your ingredients as follows:
  • Noodles, Cottage cheese, Grated cheese, Meat sauce
  • For the top layer, use this order: cottage cheese, meat, mozzarella cheese on top
Bake uncovered at 350-375 for about 45 minutes.

COLESLAW

For 4 cups shredded cabbage...

Shake up this dressing:
  • 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/8-1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp minced onion
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
Pour over cabbage and refrigerate for about an hour before serving.

Cheap Chicken at Dominick's

If you haven't picked up your Fresh Perdue Whole Chicken at Dominick's yet, now's the time to do it! At only $0.67/lb. through 3/25, it's a hard price to beat!

Butter at Aldi

Aldi is advertising their butter on sale for $1.49/lb. This price is pretty hard to beat, and right around the stock-up price for me! This was mentioned in the sales ad that came out March 18, so I'm not positive it will last past Wednesday, March 25.

Sunday Coupons

This week, we'll be learning some of the basics of couponing. But here's your first assignment: pick up a Sunday paper and save the coupons. The Sunday newspaper is the most valuable source of coupons you will get. This is what I do:
  • Purchase multiple copies
  • Clip the ones I know I'll use
  • File the rest in a file folder labeled with the day's date
Most Dollar Stores carry the newspaper for $1, and around here, Menards sells it for $1 too. The larger metropolitan area newspapers (i.e. The Chicago Tribune or New York Times) usually carry the higher value coupons, so opt for one of these if you can.

If you're curious as to what coupons will be coming out, check out Taylortown Preview.
